Despite the name, the Memory Card Adaptor is compatible with PS1 and PS2 memory cards. It connects to PS3 systems via USB and enables the use of physical memory cards with PSone Classics and PS2 Classics downloaded from the PlayStation Store. In addition, you can use this device to transfer save data from a physical memory card to an "internal memory card" created on your PS3. You can also do the opposite; by transferring memory card data from a PS3 onto an old memory card, you can access saved data on a PS2 or PS1 if you'd like to play a game you own physically on an older PlayStation model.
